Information about the 4 areas of need and the types of support that can help children and young people achieve positive outcomes.
The SEND Code of Practice (DfE, 2015) identifies 4 broad areas of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
These areas help professionals, families and young people understand the types of support that may enable children and young people to thrive.
Cognition and learning
Relates to how a child or young person learns, including memory, concentration, attainment and problem-solving skills.
Communication and interaction
Focuses on a child or young person's communication skills, understanding of language and ability to interact socially with others.
Sensory or physical needs
Includes vision or hearing needs, multi-sensory impairments and physical needs that may affect access, mobility and everyday activities.
Social, emotional and mental health
Focuses on emotional wellbeing and mental health, alongside behaviour, self-regulation, the development of positive relationships and resilience.
