Historic Town Characterisation

View Extensive Urban Surveys and maps of smaller historic towns in Sussex.

The pan-Sussex Extensive Urban Survey (EUS) is part of a national survey programme to assess the smaller historic towns of England on a county-by-county basis. This project is jointly funded by English Heritage and the County Council.

The aim of the project is to:

  • provide archaeological and historic environment research and management
  • inform our plans and local policy
  • underpin urban historic land and buildings management and interpretation
  • encourage the integration of urban historic characterisation into the wider process of protecting and enhancing urban character.
