Appropriate Adult volunteer

Support young people aged from 10-17 years when they have been arrested and held in police custody.

Specific tasks

  • Support and assist the young person.
  • Ensure the young person understands their rights.
  • Ensure that the police act fairly and respect the rights of the young person.
  • Ensure effective communication between the young person, police and others.
  • Raise any concerns around the safety and wellbeing of the young person.

Timeframe

  • Post-training commitment - Minimum 1 year.
  • Rota availability - Minimum of 4 sessions per month.
  • Sessions - Daytimes or evenings (7 days a week).

Area

  • West Sussex custody suites:
    • Crawley
    • Worthing

Selection criteria and skills required

  • Over 19 years old.
  • Live within a 30-minute journey of chosen custody suite.
  • An interest in, and empathy for, young people.
  • Non-judgemental attitude.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to be appropriately assertive.
  • Professional approach to the role.
  • Able to respect and operate within service policies and procedures.
  • Commitment to, and engagement with ongoing support, training and development.
