Occasional/Events Volunteer

Role description for Occasional/Events volunteers.

The purpose of the Occasional/Events Volunteer role is to support a range of different library events and promotions as and when required.

The role requires:

  • good communication and interpersonal skills
  • good organisational skills
  • the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • being adaptable to changes in ways of working
  • being physically fit for moving library resources and able to be on your feet for long periods.

The skills required may vary depending on duties required.

The ideal volunteer will:

  • want to support the Library Service, but may not wish to make a regular commitment
  • be happy to engage with a variety of people of all ages
  • be enthusiastic and passionate about the Library Service
  • enjoy working with people as part of a team
  • enjoy reading and finding out information
  • be committed to the equality and diversity of the local community
  • be aged 18 or above.

Your duties may include:

  • helping to plan, set up or administer library meetings/events such as author talks, book sale events or regular events, for example board games
  • greeting visitors to the library
  • serving refreshments
  • assisting staff with demonstrations of library stock and devices such as reminiscence packs, multi-sensory stories and communication resources items
  • supporting staff with the 'Select and Collect' service by choosing books and audio items for care homes to collect.

Regularity of duties

This role may be flexible and does not always involve a regular time commitment.

Guidance and support

All library volunteers are given a local contact who can provide additional support and information. At least one library assistant will be on duty with you in the library. Additional support will always be available either in the library or by phone to another library.

Training and equipment

Volunteers receive induction training, including health and safety. There will be on-the-job training for each individual role. Additional training is organised periodically for those who wish to commit further.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

This role does not require a DBS check.

References

One reference will be required before you are accepted for the role. This will be someone who has known you in a personal, work or voluntary capacity for at least three years.

Other information

All volunteers must sign a volunteer agreement. You may be required to carry out a practical exercise relevant to the role before starting.

Volunteers are required to wear a lanyard and volunteer photo ID badge while in the library. You must also sign the attendance sheet on arrival and departure.
