Adult Activities volunteer

Role description for Adult Activities volunteers.

A general description of duties include assisting in delivery of library activities to adults, which could include (but not limited to):

  • Reminiscence group - connecting people through conversations about books and reading and reminiscence who normally meet monthly
  • Tea and chat - is an informal weekly or monthly session for people to visit the library for refreshments and social interaction
  • Let’s chat - is an information conversation group for those who have English as a second language, these groups usually meet weekly
  • Book chat

Skills required include:

  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • the ability to listen and demonstrate patience and understanding
  • being able to work without supervision
  • being physically able to carry books
  • the ability to coordinate a small group of people

The ideal volunteer will:

  • enjoy communicating with a wide range of people of all ages, particularly older people and those with disabilities
  • be interested in books, reading and reminiscence
  • be passionate about the benefits of reading
  • understand our library services and resources
  • be reliable and trustworthy
  • demonstrate commitment to the equality and diversity of the local community
  • be aged 18+

Your duties will vary depending on the type of activity, but could include:

  • meet and greet visitors to the library
  • helping to plan and set up library activities, preparing and serving refreshments (if appropriate) and tidying up at the end of the activity
  • selecting books and other resources as required to meet the needs and interests of the group
  • informing members of the chosen theme (if appropriate) and the dates of meetings
  • facilitating group conversations and discussions
  • communicating any queries or concerns to library staff

Regularity of duties

Activities for adults can take place on a monthly or weekly basis so regularity of volunteering could vary dependant on need. Volunteering opportunities will be dependent on demand in individual libraries.

Guidance and support

Some sessions will run with staff support and library staff will be available to deal with queries. All library volunteers are given a local contact who can provide additional support and information.

Training and equipment

The Library Service will supply any library equipment or resources that are required.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

Those applying for this role will not be asked to complete the DBS process.

References

One reference will be required before the volunteer is accepted for the role. These will be someone who has known you in a personal, work, or voluntary capacity for at least 3 years.

Other information

All volunteers will be asked to sign a volunteer agreement and may be required to carry out a practical exercise relevant to the role before starting.

Volunteers will be required to wear a lanyard and volunteer photo ID badge whilst in the library and sign the attendance sheet on arrival and departure.

All library volunteers will be encouraged to become a member of West Sussex Library Service and subscribe to the Volunteer eNewsletter to keep up to date with their volunteer role and the latest library news.
