Business, commercial and charity waste
Where to dispose of business, commercial and charity waste and how much it costs.
Business and commercial waste
Despite there being no statutory requirement for the county council to dispose of commercial waste, we provide a service at 3 transfer stations in the county.
Transfer stations provide a facility for small businesses to dispose of their recyclables or waste, similar to household waste, using small vehicles up to a maximum of 7.5 tonnes.
Transfer stations
These stations are located at:
- Burgess Hill - Fairbridge Way, Burgess Hill, RH15 8AR
- Chichester - Coach Road, Westhampnett, PO18 0NS (entrance off Stane Street)
- Crawley (recyclables only) - Metcalf Way, Crawley, RH11 7XN
We cannot accept construction and demolition waste from businesses at these sites.
If you take commercial waste to a Recycling Centre our staff will refuse your entry.
Opening hours and costs
Opening hours for commercial waste at these sites are Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4.30pm.

Supporting documents

For help with recycling materials we cannot accept at the commercial waste transfer stations, such as plasterboard, contact the West Sussex Sustainable Business Partnership.
Charity waste
If you are a registered charity, we run schemes to help you dispose of your waste.
You may be eligible for free recycling and general waste disposal if your waste is not:
- from construction and demolition work
- commercial, industrial or hazardous
- produced by trading companies that are not registered as charities
- generated outside of West Sussex
Occasional waste
If you only produce jumble sale waste, we can make an exception allowing you to take the waste to a local Recycling Centre.
To do this, you must follow these steps:
- Contact the Environment Agency to register as a lower-tier waste carrier. They will issue you with a waste exemption certificate. Registration is free and lasts indefinitely.
- At least 2 weeks before each event, contact us.
- We will issue you with an exemption form with a specified date for use.
- Use the exemption form on the date we give you to take your waste to a Recycling Centre.
Regular waste
If you regularly generate waste whilst carrying out your charitable work, you will need to register with us before you can deposit your waste at our transfer stations.
Your disposal requirements must fall within the rules for registration. This stops commercial businesses from avoiding costs by disposing of their waste as charity waste.
Follow these steps:
- To find out if you can register, contact us.
- We will send you full details and a registration form, which you must complete and return.
- Once registered, you can use our transfer stations. We will measure your waste on a vehicle weighbridge.
You must renew your registration each year.
Community groups
If you are a group that is not registered as a charity, you might be able to get help with waste collection and disposal through the West Sussex Waste Partnership.
This normally applies to local community groups carrying out work at events such as:
- beach cleans
- litter picking
- National Spring Clean days
Find information about what you need to do about waste from these events below. We might be able to provide other support for your community group, enquire by emailing active.communities@westsussex.gov.uk.
