Simpler recycling

How government plans will change recycling collections for West Sussex residents.

The government wants to make recycling easier for everyone. They have a policy called Simpler Recycling. Under the new rules, every local authority must collect the same materials for recycling.

Materials for collection

The materials authorities must collect include:

  • paper and card
  • plastic, including:
    • bottles
    • pots
    • tubs
    • trays
  • metal food and drinks cans
  • aluminium foil
  • glass bottles and jars
  • cartons
  • food waste
  • plastic film
  • garden waste (either with or without a subscription service)

Your district or borough council already collect most of these items.

Changes to your collections

Your district or borough council will need to start collections for:

  • food waste by April 2026
  • plastic film, such as bread bags or wrappers, by April 2027

The West Sussex Waste Partnership are working to find the best way for local council's to provide the new services.

You can find out more on our page about food waste recycling collections.

We will share information about plastic film collections when we know more.
