Recycling Centre terms and conditions

See a full list of terms and conditions for using all Recycling Centres and the Book to Recycle booking system.

The following terms and conditions apply to all West Sussex Recycling Centres (including the mobile centres).

  • Residents arriving on foot, bicycle or mobility scooter will be asked to leave their material with a member of staff. They will then take your items and transfer them to the correct recycling containers for you.
  • Residents arriving on foot, bicycle or mobility scooter do not need a booking.
  • Waste that is not handed to a member of staff, and is dumped either on or off site, will not be tolerated and will be treated as fly tipped waste.
  • Vehicles parking off site with the intent to walk in will not be accepted and will be turned away.
  • Residents may visit the site once only during their allocated time slot.
  • For site health and safety reasons the following vehicles are not permitted at any of the West Sussex Recycling Centres:
    • Luton type vans
    • horseboxes
    • twin axle trailers (four wheels)
    • tipper trucks/flatbeds/drop-sides
    • vehicles with a gross weight of more than 3.5 tonnes.
  • Vans over 2.2 metres high must use Burgess Hill, Crawley, Chichester or Worthing centre only.
  • Trailers are not accepted at the Littlehampton, Bognor Regis or Horsham sites.
  • Any abusive/antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated, and you will be asked to leave the centre. Failure to leave and/or continual abuse towards centre staff, WSCC reserves the right to take further actions which may include, but not limited to, a warning notice, exclusions to WSCC Recycling Centres, legal action.
  • Site use is for West Sussex residents only, with exceptions for the following Surrey postcodes, who are allowed access to the East Grinstead site:
    • RH7 6
    • RH10 3
    • RH19 2
    • RH19 3
    • TN8 7
    • TN8 5
    • TN8 6

Please note that vans, trailers and pick-ups are not accepted from these postcodes.

  • You must bring proof of residency in West Sussex (for example, driving licence) to all WSCC Recycling Centres as you may be asked to show it. Failure to produce proof of residency if asked, will result in access being denied. See examples of acceptable proof of residency.
  • The centre operator (Biffa) has the authority to refuse use of the centre to anyone suspected of depositing commercial waste as household waste.
  • WSCC reserves the right to make further enquiries about the source of the waste and, if suspected to have originated from a commercial source, will seek to take further actions which may include, but not limited to, a warning notice, exclusions to WSCC Recycling Centres, legal action.
  • Theft of any kind at the Recycling Centres is strictly prohibited. No items are allowed to be removed from centres by unapproved contractors and if any individual is caught removing items from a centre this will be classed as theft and WSCC reserve the right to further actions, which may include site exclusions or legal action.
  • Certain materials are restricted at West Sussex Recycling Centres. Visitors may be refused entry if they bring materials that exceed the permitted quantities or if the specific recycling centre does not accept those materials. Each recycling centre has its own list of accepted materials. It is the responsibility of the visitor to ensure that the material they wish to dispose of is accepted at the specific centre they intend to visit. Before visiting a recycling centre, visitors are advised to consult the A-Z guide available on our website to confirm if the item can be disposed of at their local recycling centre and to be aware of any material restrictions.
  • Terms and Conditions (T&Cs) relating to use of Recycling Centres and other waste services may be changed at any time without prior warning.
  • Your data may be shared with local authority officers, the centre operator (Biffa) and other Governmental organisations within West Sussex for purposes of the prevention and detection of environmental crime, centre usage monitoring or any breaches within these T&Cs.

    We will only share your data to meet these statutory obligations, in order to ensure compliance with the T&Cs. The data you submit will be held for 6 months from the date of your last booking (subject to enforcement actions), but will remain within our system for centre use monitoring. Book to Recycle terms and conditions

The following terms and conditions apply to all West Sussex Recycling Centres (excluding the mobile centres).

  • You must make a booking before entering the site. Failure to book will result in site access being denied.
  • You must arrive within your allocated appointment slot. If you arrive early or later than your allocated slot, site access may be denied.
  • You may be turned away if you do not have confirmation of the booking reference number either displayed on a smartphone, a printed copy or, for appointments made by phone, written confirmation.
  • You need to provide the registration number of the vehicle you will be attending the centre in. If you are hiring a vehicle and this is unknown, you will be asked to show the hire paperwork at the centre (you cannot change the registration number, so ensure this is entered correctly. If you need to change it, you will have to cancel and rebook the appointment).
  • You may make a total of five trips in a calendar month per residential address to any West Sussex Recycling Centre.
  • You can use the link at the top of your confirmation email to cancel the booking or change it to another date or time.

    If you have a query about booking, you can call us Monday-Friday, 9.00am to 5.30pm, on 01243 642106. All available appointments are shown on the booking system. Be aware that, in accordance with the booking conditions, our advisors are unable to book more than five visits per month, or edit registration numbers on your booking.
