Career progression and development

We have a range of learning and development opportunities to aid your career progression at West Sussex County Council.

Apprenticeship route

Our trainee Trading Standards officer role (Grade 6) is a fully funded 36 month apprenticeship. You will have an excellent blend of on-the-job training with dedicated study time, attending one day a week at university. This route supports you to become a fully qualified Trading Standards officer.

The apprenticeship enables you to progress in your career after 15 months. Once you complete the appropriate modules you will progress to a Trading Standards officer (Grade 8), continuing your professional training and qualification in this role through the remainder of your apprenticeship.

When you complete your end point assessment you can progress into the fully qualified Trading Standards officer role (Grade 9).

Supporting progression

Whether you join us as a qualified Trading Standards officer (Grade 9) or if you follow the apprenticeship route to progress to this role, we will support you to gain post qualification experience to widen your professional knowledge.

You will undertake two modules, demonstrating a range of Trading Standards skills and experience in a portfolio that we consider internally. If successful you will progress into the senior Trading Standards role (Grade 10).

In addition to the above routes, West Sussex County Council have an extensive Learning and Development gateway with a variety of valuable in person or online training courses that help individuals to build skills and expand knowledge.

Whether you’re looking to build confidence, adapt to change or open new doors, the opportunities are endless.
