Have your say on proposed transport improvements in Chichester

West Sussex County Council want to hear your thoughts on proposals for transport improvements on two east-west routes in the Chichester area; the A286 Oaklands Way and the A285 between Chichester and Tangmere.

Release date: 20 November 2023

Following initial public engagement this Spring, which indicated that there is general support for the two projects, design proposals are now being put forward by us for comment.

These routes are already well-used by residents travelling to schools or work and the aim is to make walking and cycling easier and more attractive. The proposals are part of the County Council’s transport strategy for Chichester, which includes improving the A27, promoting better public transport, and providing electric vehicle charging points.

There are two options for improving the A286 Oaklands Way between the Northgate Gyratory and College Lane, both of which will help to improve walking and cycling facilities between the city centre, the University of Chichester and St Richards Hospital.

The proposal for the Chichester to Tangmere route includes improvements to the A285 Westhampnett Road and walking and cycling connections between Chichester and Tangmere. The route would also connect to a new foot and cycle bridge over the A27, which is being delivered as part of the Shopwhyke Lakes development.

Full details of the routes can be found on our consultation page, and we are encouraging residents, businesses and users to take a look and tell us what they think by completing the online survey. We will use your feedback to help us develop the designs. The schemes are at a very early stage and no decisions have been made. Whether they are built or not will likely depend on securing Government grant funding, and it will be several years before any changes on the ground might happen.

The consultation is open until 11:55pm on Monday, 18 December, 2023 and full details of both proposals can be found on our consultation page Chichester Sustainable Transport Corridors | Your Voice West Sussex.

Drop-in events have also been arranged to give people the chance to view the proposals in person and speak to members of the project team.

These will be held at:

Bassil Shippam Centre, Tozer Way, Chichester, PO19 7LG, Tuesday 28 November, 5pm to 8pm

Jubilee Hall, New Park Centre, New Park Road, Chichester, PO19 7XY, Thursday 30 November, 4pm to 8pm

Tangmere Village Centre, Malcolm Road, Tangmere, PO20 2HS, Tuesday 5 December, 4pm to 8pm
