Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS)
The CAMHS team support children and young people with learning disabilities and those experiencing mental health conditions.
Who are CAMHS and what do they do?
CAMHS are a team of clinical and professional people who are all trained and experienced in working with children, young people, families and carers. Services are spread throughout Sussex.
They help to support children and young people with learning disabilities and those experiencing mental health conditions. Examples include:
- anxiety
- depression
- self-harm
- eating disorders
- obsessive compulsive disorder
- psychosis.
CAMHS are also able to carry out assessments under the Neurodevelopmental Pathway, such as for autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This service depends on the young person's age and location.
They aim to help people to build their own skills, achieve their potential and get the most out of their life.
How do CAMHS work?
CAMHS help the young people they see, their families, carers and wider support network. This might include friends, teachers and social workers.
They use different approaches tailored to the individual needing help.
