Nina, Catering Area Supervisor
Nina sits down to tell us about why she loves her role and the benefits of working for West Sussex County Council.
Can you tell us about your role?
Some days I might be covering in a kitchen, which could mean baking the cakes, kneading dough, or cooking a main from scratch. Others, I might be meeting with schools to check paperwork, or I might be delivering some basic training.
I am continuing to use my existing management and catering skills in a totally different environment, and it feels like I am helping to deliver a worthwhile service in a unique setting. My favourite part of working this role is the variety in every day.
In this role, you will be expected to ensure that the WSCC Standards of Conduct are upheld. This might mean supporting the team in person due to a colleague’s absence, it might mean helping source ingredients or other resources, all to keep the service running smoothly.
It suits someone who enjoys an unpredictable and varied shift but prefers the consistency of set hours and an excellent work life balance.
Why did you choose to work for West Sussex County Council?
This role suits my family dynamic perfectly, I'm able to continue progressing in my career but not sacrifice valuable time with my family.
Most catering careers require evening or weekend work and for the first time in my life I have these and bank holidays off!
I'm excited to think of the opportunities ahead, when the timing suits me, just by having my foot in the door at the Council.
There are lots of training and development opportunities available and the culture of flexible working where possible really works for me.
What would you say to someone thinking of applying?
If you’re thinking of applying, there’s no risk - you will get all the training and support you need from a very experienced and committed team.
Everyone is very happy and welcoming, and I only wish I had applied sooner.
