Career progression and development
We are committed to supporting your development and career progression within our classroom-based support staff roles and we offer a career with:
- a comprehensive induction
- ongoing learning and development opportunities to support you to be the best you can be in your role.
- apprenticeship opportunities: There are a range of apprenticeships available with very competitive pay.
Teaching assistant apprentices work closely with their classroom teacher to help positively shape the education of children and young people.
The training programme will take between 18-24 months to complete, depending how many hours you work each week. Upon successful completion, you will gain a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification which is equivalent to two A levels.
Other apprenticeships available within schools include a Level 4 School Business Manager apprenticeship and a Premises Officer apprenticeship, which ranges from Level 2 to Level 4.
- Progression opportunities, including:
- Progression through different Teaching Assistant roles
It is possible to complete training and/or apprenticeships to work through different levels of support staff roles in schools, from Teaching Assistant to Higher level Teaching Assistant. Depending on the type of school, areas of specialism training can be provided. - Steppingstone to potential teacher training
There are many routes into teaching and, dependent on your qualifications, you may be able to work while you qualify. Our schools and academies support many of the schemes available.
The National College for Teaching and Leadership website, Get into Teaching, provides comprehensive guidance on choosing the right teacher training route for you. It also includes university-led training for undergraduates and postgraduates with guidance about applying for a job in teaching.
