1 When a coroner investigates
A coroner investigates when:
- deaths are violent or unnatural
- the cause of death is unknown
- the person died in prison, police custody or other state detention.

2 Court facilities and support
Court layout
- The coroner will sit at the front of the room.
- The witness desk and coroner’s officer desk will be at the front of the room either side of the coroner.
- Legal representatives will sit at desks facing the coroner.
- If there is a jury, they will normally be seated to one side of the room so that they have a clear view of the witness desk, the legal representatives and the coroner.
- Family members of the deceased will normally sit behind the legal representatives.
Opening hours
- Doors are only open to the public when the court is in session.
Parking
Visitors should park off site and there are several public car parks nearby.
Disabled parking
If you require disabled parking, please drive up to the barrier just outside the entrance to County Hall North/Parkside on North Street and ring the telephone number displayed and one of our security staff will direct you to a disabled parking bay.
By car
There is no parking for visitors at County Hall North/Parkside, so visitors will need to use alternative parking or methods of transport. There are several well sign-posted car parks in Horsham. Swan Walk car park is within a short walking distance of County Hall North. There is also a Park and Ride facility just off the A24 in the south west of the town.
Train station
The train station is a 5 minute walk from County Hall North/Parkside.
Bus station
Horsham bus station is at the junction of Worthing Road and Black Horse Way - a 15 minute walk from County Hall North/Parkside. Some routes stop in the Carfax, just 5 minutes walk from the office.
Car parking
There is ample free parking in marked and unmarked bay.
Public transport
The court is within 5-10 minutes walk from bus stops nearby. Find more information about bus numbers and times.
Accommodation
The Coroners Court is open to members of the public. However, accommodation at Woodvale Coroner’s Court is limited, therefore priority will always be given to family, other interested persons and witnesses.
Where there is likely to be a large number of attendees, alternative venues will be used.
If you wish to attend any particular inquest it would be helpful if you could give an indication in advance of the hearing. In certain circumstances, and at the discretion of the Coroner, it may be possible to facilitate attendance via Microsoft Teams. To notify us of your attendance, or to request video attendance to an inquest, contact the Coroner's Office.

Coroner’s Court support service
Emotional and practical support to families and witnesses attending inquests can be found on the Coroners' Courts Support Service website.
We are delighted to announce that the Coroner Court Support volunteers have been honoured by the High Sherriff of West Sussex in recognition of the great and valuable services they provide to the community of West Sussex. The awards ceremony was held on Thursday, 21 March 2024.

3 Contact the Coroner's Service

Office hours are 8.00am to 4.00pm, Monday to Friday. Closed on all bank holidays.
West Sussex Coroner
The West Sussex Coroner is an independent judicial officer who works in partnership with West Sussex County Council.
The West Sussex Senior Coroner is Penelope Schofield.
4 Types of inquests
- Opening - The coroner formally opens an inquest in public. At the opening, the coroner will set the dates for subsequent hearings. In some cases, the inquest will conclude on the same day as it is opened (known as single hearing inquests).
- Full inquest - A fact-finding inquiry held in court to establish who has died and how, when and where the death occurred. They can be held with our without a jury. Witnesses may be called to give evidence.
- Pre-inquest review hearing - An administrative hearing held before the final inquest hearing. Where procedural issues are dealt with in preparation for the inquest.
- Documentary inquest - Where evidence is not in dispute and no witnesses need to be called, a summary of the evidence is read to the court and the coroner will arrive at their conclusion on the basis of the documents alone.
- Inquests in writing - These inquests are conducted on the basis of documentary evidence and do not require a court hearing. The coroner will provide a written note of their conclusion. Inquests in writing will be listed at 9.00am on the Monday of each week. However, they may be concluded at any time during that week.
