General Register Office indexes 1837-2008

How to find records of births, marriages and deaths at the Record Office.

Records of births, marriages and deaths

The records relating to births, marriages and deaths registered in England and Wales since 1 July 1837 are kept by the Registrar General at the General Register Office (GRO).

The registers themselves are not open to inspection but information from them is supplied in the form of certificates.

What we hold

West Sussex Record Office has GRO indexes on microfiche, but you can also search them on the Ancestry and findmypast websites which are available free of charge on our public access computers located in the Record Office and West Sussex libraries.
