Meetings of the full Council of 71 members are the principal forum for political debate and take place 5 times a year.
Most day-to-day Cabinet decisions are taken by Cabinet Members individually. Formal Cabinet meetings in January each year consider the Performance Framework and the budget prior to approval by full Council. Other Cabinet meetings throughout the year consider topical themes.
Select Committees are the means by which proposed decisions are scrutinised, the effectiveness of existing policy is reviewed, and the budget and performance monitoring of service delivery is undertaken.
The County Council has appointed a number of committees to deal with Governance and Standards and other functions that cannot be delegated to the Cabinet. These also include Planning and Rights of Way Committees.

The Childrens Services Improvement Board oversees the improvement of the exercise of the Councils functions in respect of Childrens Services.
