Members' allowances
The amounts to which members are entitled, including the basic
allowance for every member and expenses for special
responsibilities, travel, subsistence and paying for carers are
shown in the Council's Members' Allowances Scheme in Part 6 of the
Constitution.
An Independent Remuneration Panel makes recommendations to the
Council about the allowances to be paid to members.
The basic allowance is designed to provide some recompense for
the time spent on County Council business and to at least in part
recognise the various costs likely to be incurred as an elected
member such as the use of a member's home, telephone calls.
Special responsibility allowances are paid to the Chairman,
Vice-Chairman, Leader of the Council and Deputy Leader, to Cabinet
Members, their Deputies and to chairmen of committees, members who
sit on the Adoption Panels and to Group Leaders to reflect the
additional work and expense that those duties entail.
Travelling and subsistence allowance are paid in some
circumstances. A carer's allowance can be claimed to assist with
the care of family members as a consequence of members' work as
councillors.
The sums paid as
Members' allowances are published annually.
