WSCC and UKHarvest
In October 2022 the county council launched a 6-month pilot project to encourage people to take advantage of surplus food rescue services, incorporating food waste prevention education sessions, which in turn works to reduce the amount of edible food that ends up in people’s household rubbish bins.
Since the full programme was launched in April 2023 the UKHarvest food waste minimisation project has prevented over 94 tonnes of food from going to waste!
Due to its success the programme is now being extended for a 3rd year, running until April 2026.
Each district and borough will host a UKHarvest community food hub once a month where, for a suggested small donation, people will be able to pick up a wide selection of surplus foods which would have otherwise ended up as waste from suppliers.
- Adur: Southwick
- Arun: Bognor Regis
- Chichester: Petworth

What is a Community Food Hub?
Community Food Hubs are designed to reduce surplus food from suppliers that would have otherwise gone to waste. All residents are welcome to visit the child-friendly hubs and fill up a bag with delicious, rescued food.
Hubs also offer recipes, food prevention hints and tips and host information stands on various subjects including waste prevention, wellbeing and citizens advice.
Our fun ‘Fight Against Food Waste’ booklet, available at all Community Food Hubs, is also free to download from the Let's get cooking web page (UKHarvest website).
Remember:
- hubs take place at locations and times to suit you
- to bring your own bag
- suggested donation: £5
Multi Agency Support Hubs
West Sussex County Council and UKHarvest are working together to host 3 Multi-Agency Support Hubs over the next 12 months. These events will run alongside Community Food Hubs and bring together a variety of support services in one place.
Participating services include the West Sussex Waste Prevention Team, Citizens Advice, the Fire and Rescue Service and community healthcare workers, among others.
