Homework frequently asked questions by parents and carers
Is there a legal requirement for schools to set
homework?
There is no legal requirement for a school to set homework. Ask to
see a copy of the School's Homework Policy. This will explain
the procedures in your child's school.
If I have issues about homework, who should I speak
to?
You should discuss any issues with your child's class
teacher/form tutor, or your child's subject teacher.
How do I know what homework has been set?
Parents should see their child's Homework Diary. You should
regularly monitor and make comments in your child's Homework Diary
/ Planner / Home-School Liaison Book.
If I am not happy with the response from the
school, what should I do?
If you have not been satisfied with the response of the school,
you should raise the issue in writing with a senior member of
staff, e.g. Head of Year / Deputy Headteacher / Headteacher.
Alternatively you can arrange a meeting with the Headteacher.
If you are still not satisfied, you need to put your complaint
formally in writing to the Chair of Governors and it will be dealt
with as a "Curriculum" complaint. The school will advise you of the
process.
