About school term dates

School term and holiday dates are usually set over 18 months in advance of the academic year. The County Council liaises with neighbouring authorities, headteachers, union representatives and the Diocese to secure the best alignment of dates across the region.

Term dates are based on a school year of around 195 days, although individual schools can use five of these days for staff training inset days.

The County Council is required to set school term and holiday dates for community and voluntary-controlled schools.

Local authorities do not have to abide by, though most are supportive of, a nationally agreed pattern. This is because it permits local flexibility as the best route towards harmony and coherence in the establishment of dates.

Locally, term dates are consulted on through school and teaching representative bodies before being finalised.

Past term dates

Past term dates are only held by the authority for three years as part of our disposal policy. You can find past term dates in the supporting documents below. If you need any other dates, please contact your child's school.
