You could save up to £80 a month by reducing your food waste

40% of the contents of the average waste bin in West Sussex is food waste! This includes avoidable food waste such as, leftovers and packaged food!

Saving food from going to waste is not only good for the environment but can also save you money. Food that is thrown away is roughly the equivalent of £20 per month per person, or an average of £80 per month for a family of four based on a survey completed by WRAP.

Watch our video to find out more, or you can visit our website to find out how to reduce food waste at home. There is information on how to be a smart shopper, how to love your leftovers and how to keep food fresher for longer.

We’d love to hear your ideas on how you prevent food from going to waste at home. See our Facebook page and let us know in the comments.

The Big Fix returns to West Sussex!

This month we’re encouraging people to buy less and fix more with Recycle Devon’s Big Fix campaign. The Big Fix is designed to counteract a throwaway culture and promote repair and reuse.

A repair café is a free meeting place where people can bring things to be repaired by volunteers in their local community. This can include things such as clothes, furniture, electricals, bikes and toys.

In 2023 the national campaign saw a total of 83 repair cafés get involved and successfully fix 2,761 broken items.

Here in West Sussex, we want to support reuse and repair as much as we can and, with the amazing network of volunteer-run repair cafés across the county, residents are in good hands.

For information on locations of repair cafés in West Sussex visit our Big Fix web page.

May bank holidays

Don't miss your bin collection this month because of the bank holidays. Check with your local district or borough council to see if your bin days will be changing:

The opening hours for the Recycling Centres will remain unchanged over the bank holidays. Full opening hours can be found on our website.
