What is a Housing
Market Assessment?
The Housing Market Assessment (HMA) establishes the long-term
aims for housing supply and demand in West Sussex up to
2026. It provides local authorities with a better
understanding of their housing markets and a robust evidence base
for new planning and housing policies.
A county-wide HMA has been produced to consider:
- why people choose to live where they do;
- what factors drive the housing markets in West Sussex;
- the need for affordable housing as well as homes to be sold and
rented on the open market;
- past, current, and future housing trends;
- how people might expect to live in the future, taking into
account projected changes in population, household formations, and
developments in the local economy across the county.
It also focuses on specific local areas of interest, such as:
- the rural housing market;
- affordability of housing;
- the growth in the number of people buying to let;
- those having second homes;
- the housing needs of older people and those with special
needs.

Reports for West Sussex
Two key sub-regional housing markets have been identified in
West Sussex: one in the north, the other covering the coast. A
report has been produced for each of these housing market
areas.
A summary report has also been published for each local
authority area.
The documents available under Downloads are all in PDF. Find out
how to read PDF documents and
information on accessibility.
The core data and key findings will be updated annually by the
local authorities; full reviews will be undertaken approximately
every 5 years.
