About the Rowans
The Rowans centre offers a specialist service for people with an acquired brain injury (ABI), physical, sensory or memory impairment, physical disabilities or complex needs.
It has a positive and professional working relationship with the neurological team, social work teams and occupational therapists, as well as many local agencies.
The team is keen for organisations or individuals to get involved and would like to hear from local groups and charities interested in supporting the work they do.
Staff support people to achieve their individual goals. This could be re-learning skills such as money management or cooking, or improving memory with functional exercises. The staff team work closely with the individual, their carers and relatives.
Day-to-day activities include a wide range of group activities, such as:
- art and drawing groups
- IT skills training
- memory lane
There are also separately run groups and activities for people with an ABI. These include:
- reablement cooking
- coordination exercises.

The Rowans gym
Start your fitness journey with Rowans gym
The Rowans gym is designed to cater for both the able bodied and people with health issues and disabilities, with the layout allowing for easy wheelchair access around the equipment.
As well as being open to the general public, it also accepts referrals from GPs, cardiac rehab centres, physios, mental health services and colleges, amongst others. This means we are able to offer you the training experience that is best suited to your requirements.
The gym offers a free introductory session, including a health questionnaire to enable us to provide completely bespoke training plans. The instructors ensure that everyone is confident and competent on the equipment they wish to use.
Sessions last roughly 45 minutes to an hour and there is always a fully trained, friendly instructor on hand to offer advice, assistance or just a bit of encouragement.
The gym has all of the usual equipment you would expect to see, including:
- rowing machines
- stepping machine
- exercise bikes
- resistance machines
- free weights.
In addition to the fully equipped fitness suite, the gym offers a wide range of functional training equipment, as well as specialist rehabilitation tools such as training stairs and parallel bars.
