West Sussex gears up for World Mental Health Day

Residents affected by mental health can get support at their local library.

Local libraries, charities, health organisations and businesses are all getting involved in this year’s World Mental Health Day on 10 October 2017.

This year’s theme - Mental Health in the Workplace - will be spread throughout the services at West Sussex County Council.

The County Council’s children and young people’s services are getting involved by supporting an action group of 11-18 year olds who tackle the stigma around mental health, Free Your Mind, who will be heading to the 5th Worthing Mental Health Awareness Week.

The week-long event is expected to see displays from more than 30 local charities and organisations in the Information Centre at Offington Park Methodist Church.

The County Council’s Public Health team is partnering up with Coastal West Sussex Mind, Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and a range of other agencies for the awareness day and holding a Time to Change West Sussex employers' event.

At the event on 13 October at Horsham’s County Hall North, businesses will hear about the employers pledge and how it is already changing how people think and act about mental health in the workplace.

Louise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “Mental health is something which touches every area of work at the County Council and, indeed, every area of the county.

“I am pleased to see us all working together to remove the stigmas which sadly still affect those with mental health issues. And I would encourage all residents and businesses to get involved.”

Residents affected by mental health can get support at their local library which offers a collection of Reading Well Books on Prescription.

Bognor Regis Library is also teaming up with Coastal West Sussex Mind to celebrate World Mental Health Day.

On the day, 10 October 2017, residents are invited to a day of information and mindfulness where they can get information and support about mental health issues from local organisations.

Free tickets are available from the library or for further information, contact Jo Bulis on 07495 077341.
