West Sussex County Council statement in response to Gatwick’s Masterplan

Release date: 18 July 2019

Gatwick Airport is a long established major business which is important to the West Sussex economy in supporting and creating many thousands of jobs for our local communities.

It is vital that the impact of the proposed airport expansion is properly understood and mitigated. Increased congestion and strain on infrastructure, together with environmental impacts such as noise and air quality are especially important.

Investment in new technologies to reduce noise and air pollution and in the transport infrastructure must be a central part of the airport’s future plans.

West Sussex County Council, working with other local authorities, will scrutinise Gatwick Airport Limited’s (GAL’s) plans to ensure that the benefits of airport expansion are realised and the negative impacts on residents are mitigated and managed, including during construction.

The Council will look to enter into a formal agreement with GAL to ensure the cost of the Council’s work is met by GAL and the burden does not fall to taxpayers.
