Release date: 7 May 2020

West Sussex County Council’s Meals on Wheels service, provided by apetito, will be serving up the free dessert to approximately 650 customers to help them mark the occasion.

John Figgins, West Sussex County Council’s Head of Catering Services, said: “We know many people across West Sussex will be keen to celebrate VE Day, and our Meals on Wheels customers are no exception to this.

“Some of our elderly customers live on their own or in isolated locations where it is not always easy for them to celebrate in the same way as others, but especially so this year given the coronavirus restrictions.

“Hopefully the free strawberry gateau will be a welcome little treat to enjoy in the afternoon and raise spirits during a difficult time for so many.”

Apetito produces nutritious meals for hospitals, care homes and community services across the county. Meals can be booked for short periods or longer term and are delivered seven days a week, 365 days a year to suit a variety of dietary requirements. They are delivered hot between 11am and 2pm and are cooked en-route in specialist Chefmobile vehicles.

The service not only provides nutritious meals but also makes sure older people have contact with people who conduct a brief Safe and Well check upon delivery of their meal. The service is available to all West Sussex postcodes and continues to deliver meals during the coronavirus outbreak, with drivers adhering to the current Covid-19 government health and safety guidelines.

Amanda Jupp, the County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, said: “I know many are planning to enjoy VE Day from their own homes and gardens this year, with many of our older and more vulnerable residents wishing to take part in the celebrations to commemorate the end of the Second World War.

“Our Meals on Wheels service is a vital lifeline for some customers, but this year I feel sure that this thoughtful gesture from apetito will bring them some cheer during what must be a really difficult time for a number of people.”
