Staying safe in the kitchen: Worthing firefighters to host free drop-in event

Release date: 9 November 2022

Crews from Worthing Fire Station will be running a free kitchen fire safety event at Tesco in Durrington on Friday 18 November.

Over the past year West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service attended 205 kitchen fires across the county. This event aims to raise awareness of kitchen fire safety and provide some key safety advice to prevent fires from breaking out.

Local firefighters will be on hand to explain how residents can reduce the risk of fires starting in the kitchen and throughout the home. They will cover what people should do in the event of a fire, including escape plans, and will also be offering home visits to provide further support to vulnerable residents.

Watch Manager, James Everett, said: “Kitchen fires are one of the most common incidents we attend yet in many cases they are easily preventable. One of the key things to remember is to never leave your cooking unattended.

“Having working smoke alarms fitted is the best way to stay safe at home. Don’t forget to test them regularly and in a fire situation, remember to get out, stay out and call 999.

“If you’re interested in learning simple ways to avoid fires starting in your home, then please come along to this event. The crews will be set up in the car park at Tesco in Durrington on New Road from 9am until 1pm and we are really looking forward to meeting our local community.”
