Stay warm and safe this winter with free electric blanket testing

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is offering people the chance to have their electric blankets tested for free at events in Burgess Hill and Chichester.

Nicki Peddle, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s Head of Prevention said: “We have seen an increasing amount of conversation online and in the media about electric blankets and how they can be used instead of central heating to save money.

“As with most alternative forms of heating, electric blankets pose fire risks and if they become faulty, the consequences can be catastrophic. Wear and tear of these items is inevitable and we encourage people to get an appointment booked in so we can ensure their blanket is still safe to use.”

In a recent round of testing, 38% of electric blankets tested in West Sussex failed the safety test, so it is vital people have theirs tested.

The service is holding two events due to rising concerns that more people may be using unsafe electric blankets to save money this winter.

The events are as follows:

  • Burgess Hill Council Chamber: 24 January 2023
  • County Hall, Chichester: 2 February 2023

To book an appointment, please call our Prevention Team on 0345 872 9719.

Pre-booked appointments are required, and appointments will be made on a first come first serve basis.

If you are not able to get to a testing event, advice on electric blankets can be found on our website. We always recommend that you replace your blanket if it is more than 10 years old.
