Really, wheely good meals for residents

West Sussex County Council wins The Meals on Wheels Award category at national event

The West Sussex Meals on Wheels service has been recognised for its outstanding service at a national awards ceremony.

West Sussex County Council won The Meals on Wheels Award category at last week’s (Thursday, October 5) ceremony, held by The National Association of Care Catering.

There were eight awards in total, each recognising ‘excellence, innovation and exceptional service’ in the care catering sector.

West Sussex County Council, in partnership with apetito, our meals on wheels provider, makes Meals on Wheels available to all our residents – 365 days of the year. We use an innovative 'chefmobile' model that sees meals cooked fresh en route to residents’ homes.

Meals on Wheels enables many older, disabled and housebound people to remain living independently in their own homes. The service also provides support at times of particular need, for example, for someone returning home from hospital.

In the past 12 months the service has grown by 10 per cent, now providing 150,000 meals a year, plus 20,000 meals each year to Day Centres.

The judges praised the outstanding service of which West Sussex residents can be justifiably proud.

Amanda Jupp, Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, said: "This is great recognition for the service. It is not just a meal, it also helps older people to stay independent for longer which is a priority for us.

“Receiving this award is the icing on the cake and it demonstrates the big impact the service has on those residents who rely on the meals in West Sussex."
