Progress - despite wet weather - in major highway improvements scheme

Work is being carried out at night so safe access can be maintained for school/commuter traffic and other road users during the day

Release date: 19 November 2019

Progress continues to be made in the Broadbridge Heath major highway improvements scheme - despite the wet autumn weather.

The scheme involves the permanent closure of a section of the A281, which went through the middle of the village, and building improved links between ‘old’ and new housing areas. Improvements also include new shared-use cycle and pedestrian paths.

The majority of the project is scheduled to be completed in late Autumn/early December, particularly for the Billingshurst Road / connector road.

Between late November and mid-December, there will be some night-time resurfacing and letters have been sent, informing residents nearest these works. The work is being undertaken at night so safe access can be maintained for school/commuter traffic and other road users during the day.

A West Sussex Highways spokesperson said: “Every effort will be made to limit disruption and we apologise for any inconvenience.  Although resurfacing does cause noise and vibration, the aim will be to complete as much of the noisiest phases of the work as early in the evening/night as possible.”

Subject to factors, such as severe weather, the three areas of night-time work will be:

Newbridge Roundabout - preliminary works are required on the traffic islands and footways in preparation for road surfacing and white line marking. It will involve the use of single-way traffic signals overnight around the roundabout and the closure of the new connector road. It has been scheduled between 8pm and 6am from Monday 25 November to Friday 6 December.

Tesco Roundabout and road leading to Farthings Hill Roundabout - this is for resurfacing works on the road, footpaths and roundabout. The section of road between Farthings Hill and Tesco (Wickhurst Lane roundabout) will be closed: 10pm Saturday 7 December, to 6am on Sunday 8 December; 8pm Sunday 8 December to 6am Monday 9 December; 10pm Saturday 14 December to 6am Sunday 15 December; 8pm Sunday 15 December to 6am Monday 16 December.

Special access arrangements have been made for Tesco and Leisure Centre night staff.

Farthings Hill Roundabout – for surfacing work and white line marking there will be local closures on the roundabout and slip roads, with signed diversions to enable traffic to access the area. This work is scheduled to last from 10pm to 6am each night from Monday 9 December to Friday 13 December.
