No working smoke alarms is a recipe for disaster


West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is reminding residents about the importance of cooking fire safety after smoke alarms across West Sussex were put to the test throughout June.
Fire crews from across the county were called to 71 automatic fire alarms (AFA’s) in the last month, as a result of cooking. Thankfully the majority of these calls were small incidents that did not cause serious harm or damage; however they firmly demonstrate the need for working smoke alarms in every home.

Gary Locker, Group Commander, said; “Preventing fires remains a key priority for our service, and we are encouraging everyone to remain vigilant when cooking.

“Each of these cooking related incidents could have had a very different outcome if these residents hadn't have had working smoke alarms. We urge everyone to never leave cooking unattended and fit smoke alarms on each floor of their property. These smoke alarms should be tested once a week.”

Statistics show that two thirds of fires in the home start in the kitchen, and the majority of these started on the cooker or oven. However, having a working smoke alarm can significantly reduce the risk of damage and injury.
