As more than 100,000 West Sussex schoolchildren have just broken up for the summer holidays, it’s the perfect time to discover the huge range of family-friendly activities on offer across West Sussex.

West Sussex County Council’s ‘Summertime Sussex’ campaign highlights the many ways to keep children entertained during the summer. It includes everything from the best beaches, family attractions and cycle routes to castles, theatres and museums.

Louise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “In West Sussex we’re really lucky to have so much on our doorstep for the whole family to enjoy. We have the beautiful South Downs National Park, stunning beaches, farms, adventure playgrounds, parks and gardens and so much more. And with around 40 days to fill over the next six weeks, families have lots of time to explore our amazing county. Many local activities are free or low cost, which really helps at this time of year.”

Working with local schools, the council interviewed pupils and asked them to share their favourite things to do in West Sussex during the summer holidays.

Louise added: “Who better to ask than children themselves! Our video is packed full of ideas direct from enthusiastic local schoolchildren, who told us they love rock pooling, climbing trees, body boarding, canoeing, camping and swimming. And they can do all of it right here in West Sussex.

“With so much on offer it can be difficult to decide where to go and what to do. That’s why we’ve worked with our partners, through the Experience West Sussex Partnership, to develop the Experience West Sussex website.

"It contains ideas and inspiration, local events and hidden gems. Visitors to the website can explore specific areas in West Sussex or search for their favourite activities such as cycling, watersports or nature trails.”

This summer look out for posters in local libraries, follow West Sussex County Council’s social media for tips and inspiration, as well as competitions, trivia and nostalgia – all showing why there’s no need to go anywhere else as West Sussex has it all.

Tourism is a major industry in West Sussex, providing 48,000 local jobs and contributing close to £1 billion to the local economy.
