A live Twitter chat will be held this Saturday (October 24) to encourage more people to apply to become a retained firefighter in West Sussex.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Gavin Watts will be amongst a team of officers and serving retained firefighters logging on to take questions from anyone interested in finding out more about the role and the rewards it can offer.
To join in the online event, which takes place between 10am and noon, simply use the hashtag #BeOnCall. The Twitter chat will be run from West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service @WestSussexFire handle.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Gavin Watts, said:
“Retained firefighters are such a vital part of the fire service but there are still lots of misconceptions about their role. This live Twitter event will give people a chance to chat to us online and learn more about it, find out what we’re looking for in potential applicants, get an idea of the recruitment and training process and what it’s like being a retained firefighter.
“The chat coincides with a ‘have a go’ day that we are running at Horsham Fire Station. We know that not everyone who has an interest in becoming a retained firefighter can travel to Horsham on that day so we would encourage them to log on to Twitter and chat with us online.”
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service has recently launched a new campaign to recruit more retained firefighters to help protect communities right across the county.
Retained firefighters are men and women who combine their day jobs or duties with being "on call" for the fire service, ready to respond to emergencies when they are needed.
They receive regular training to equip them with the skills to deal with fires, road traffic accidents and a wide range of other emergencies. They also play an important role in community engagement activities.
Retained firefighters receive an annual retaining fee as well as additional payments for any incidents or community safety events they attend.
