West Sussex County Council has joined forces with Alcohol Concern to inspire Dry January participants with a new online game featuring Marty the Martian.

The interactive game involves participants helping Marty save up alcohol units throughout January to fuel his ship and make it home.

It was the idea of the County Council’s Public Health team and developed by Alcohol Concern. The County Council helped to fund the game’s development.

The game launched on 1 January 2015 – the first day of Dry January and is available throughout the month.

Councillor Christine Field, Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, said: “We are delighted to have collaborated with Alcohol Concern on this new game.

“The game is a fun way for people to experience the benefits of going alcohol-free for Dry January.

“Why not sign up for Dry January with friends, family or colleagues so you’re in it together? The benefits of cutting back on alcohol include losing weight and a better night’s sleep, plus you will also save money.”

Game participants unlock a number of awards and challenges along the way. The game also includes an interactive quiz, an online mocktail bar with alcohol-free recipes as well as calorie and units-saved counters.

Emily Robinson, Director of Campaigns at Alcohol Concern, said: “The Dry January game is a great addition to the 2015 campaign.

“This added tool will not only be really fun for participants, but it will give them an extra set of information and support throughout their alcohol free month.”

The game will be accessible online with participants being able to share their rewards and trophies through Facebook.

People can sign up for Dry January on the website.
