Release date: 17 May 2018

Community organisations came together this week to launch an exciting new crowdfunding project in West Sussex.

West Sussex Crowd ( is a brand new way of funding community projects in the county.

It allows community groups to gather funding and support to improve their local areas – from music festivals to outdoor play areas.

The launch event in Worthing saw representatives from groups, businesses, West Sussex County Council and the crowdfunding website Spacehive, come together to learn about crowdfunding, network and hear from successful projects.

Tom Shakhli, from the Brixton Pound Café project, and Leyla Laksari, from Living Under One Sun, encouraged West Sussex residents to get behind the West Sussex Crowd and get crowdfunding.

Tom shared his own experiences of crowdfunding. He said: “I would really urge people in West Sussex to take that leap and set up your own crowdfunding campaign for your project.

“I think you will find there’s so much generosity out there waiting to be unleashed.

“People will want to get involved and they’ll give you their money, but they’ll also give you their time.”

Leyla continued: “You’re already are doing amazing things for your community.

The way forward is working together and crowdfunding will help you make yourselves and your projects visible.”

Debbie Kennard, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Safer, Stronger Communities, said: “West Sussex Crowd is all about the community, it’s all about you.

“Thank you to everyone who came along to the launch event, it was fantastic to meet so many inspiring individuals.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing lots of crowdfunding campaigns launching in the next few weeks here in West Sussex.”

West Sussex County Council is making £330,000 Community Initiative Fund available to pledge to projects on the site.

This will replace its previous funding initiatives including the Small Grants Fund and the Members’ Big Society Fund and will be allocated at County Local Committee (CLC) meetings throughout the year.

Free events for groups with project ideas who would like to start crowdfunding will run in each District and Borough area during May.
