60 years of service for Worthing firefighters

Paul Gilbert, Steve Robinson and Alf Ancell.

Release date: 23 April 2021

Three firefighters from Worthing Fire Station on the same watch have all been presented with their 20 years’ long service and good conduct medals.

Black Watch Manager Steve Robinson and firefighters Alf Ancell and Paul Gilbert all received their medals on Friday during a presentation at the station led my Station Manager Roy Barraclough.

All three joined the service in 1999, with Alf and Paul serving on the same watch together at Worthing for the last 20 years. Steve also joined in 1999, initially at Littlehampton where he served as a retained firefighter, before becoming a wholetime firefighter and serving at Worthing from 2002.

Steve said: “It doesn’t feel as though it has been 20 years, the time has flown by. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time serving at Worthing Fire Station – it’s a busy station with specialist appliances, and we get a real variety of calls come in which means that no two days are ever the same. I have been fortunate enough to be seconded into other teams within the fire service during my career, but I have always found myself drawn back to the operational side of the service which I love.”

Station Manager Roy Barraclough said: “It’s unusual for three firefighters all on one station to receive their long service medals at the same time, but for all three of them to be on the same watch and to have all served at Worthing is amazing and a real commitment to the community they serve.”

Chief Fire Officer Sabrina Cohen-Hatton said: “20 years of service to the people of Worthing is a remarkable achievement, but to have three officers reach the same milestone together is incredible. The knowledge and skills that Steve, Alf and Paul have built up over the years is invaluable in helping to keep their communities safe, and I know that I am not alone in thanking them for the service they have devoted to the people of Worthing.”
