School crossing patrol volunteer

Help children to have a safe journey to and from school by volunteering to conduct traffic counts.

Help us undertake traffic and pedestrian counts at school crossing patrol sites during morning and afternoon school crossing patrol sessions at a number of sites across the county.

Role description

Skills required

Ability to observe and record simultaneous data accurately over a short period of time.

Ideal volunteer

Our ideal volunteer will be interested in road safety and related data collection and be prepared to travel and be on site between 8.00am - 9.00m and 3.00pm - 4.00pm.

Details of duties

  • Travel to an agreed site (various schools/adjacent road across the county).
  • Use a manual hand-held counter to record data.
  • Transfer data and other details onto a form.
  • Return completed forms to the County Council.
  • Make claims for travelling expenses.

Regularity of duties

A morning and afternoon session at a number of sites as agreed (minimum 10 sites per volunteer) until all 130 sites have been completed. This should take 30-40 hours over a period of months.

Guidance and support

The School Crossing Patrol Manager will support and advise volunteers during office hours.

Training and equipment

An introductory session will be provided. This will include a general overview of the School Crossing Patrol Service and how to survey and collect data during school crossing patrol sessions.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks

Those applying for this role will not be asked to complete a DBS check.

We will not require a reference for this role.
