Arts and crafts volunteer (Durrington and Rustington)

Help people develop their creative skills at The Pines day centre or the Oak Community Project.

Both centres provide a wide range of activities for adults with learning disabilities. They are currently seeking a volunteer to engage people in arts and crafts sessions.

Role description

  • An interest in working with a group of people with learning disabilities.

Ideal volunteer

Our ideal volunteer enjoys mixing with a diverse group of people, is patient and understanding, positive and encouraging and has experience in craft projects.

Details of duties

Supporting customers in arts and crafts activities at a day centre alongside a member of staff. We are happy for volunteers to contribute to the sessions’ content as they wish, though learning material and session plans will also be provided by the day centre.

Sessions need to be straightforward and easy to follow, and possible to do with a group of people who may have different skills and abilities due to their cognitive and/or physical abilities.

Regularity of duties

Sessions take place in the mornings on weekdays from 9.00am and last two to three hours; shorter afternoon activities also take place between 1.30-3.30pm. Volunteers would need to commit to a minimum of one session per week.

Guidance and support

A member of staff will be available at all times during the volunteering sessions.

Training and equipment

Volunteers will receive a formal introductory session, including health and safety advice, before beginning their role. Any necessary equipment or materials will be provided by the centre. West Sussex County Council training will also be available.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

Volunteers will not be required to have a DBS check before undertaking the role.

References

Volunteers will be required to provide two references before undertaking the role and to attend a short interview.
