Out and about volunteer - Chichester Canal Basin

Volunteer to to assist on trips to Chichester Canal Basin with a small group from the Wrenford Centre.

The Wrenford Centre is a West Sussex County Council day care centre providing activities for people with mild to complex learning disabilities. Activities include arts and crafts, sewing and knitting, music, drama, boxing, yoga, sports, cooking and gardening.

We are looking for someone to assist a member of staff from the Wrenford Centre, Terminus Road, Chichester,  in taking 4-5 clients out on Tuesday mornings.

They will be supporting the clients as they undertake litter-picking picking along Chichester Canal Basin, to improve the area for the community and wildlife. The group will then have a cup of tea in the local cafe.

Role description 

Skills required

  • A positive attitude.
  • An interest in working with a diverse group of people with learning difficulties.
  • Good communication skills.

Ideal volunteer

Our ideal volunteer enjoys mixing with a diverse group of people, is patient and understanding, and positive and encouraging. 

Details of duties

  • Assisting 4-5 Day Centre clients with their litter-picking.
  • Supervising clients in the Canal Café as they have a beverage and/or snack. This does not include looking after or handling clients’ money.

Regularity of duties

Sessions take place on Tuesday mornings from 9.30am to 12 noon, beginning at the Wrenford Centre.  

Guidance and support

A member of Day Centre staff will be available at all times during the volunteering sessions.

Training and equipment

Volunteers will receive a formal introductory session before beginning their role. Any equipment required for the activities will be provided by the Centre.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

Volunteers will not be required to have a DBS check before undertaking the role.

References

Volunteers are invited for an informal interview and a short tour of the Wrenford Centre. Following this, if they would like to volunteer, they are asked to provide a reference prior to undertaking the role.
