Education Welfare Service
By law, all children of compulsory school age* are entitled to
an efficient full-time education, suitable to their age, aptitude
and ability. The Education Welfare Service (EWS) work with schools
and parents to advise and ensure that children and young people are
able to benefit from the education provided. The Education
Welfare Service also works with other agencies and groups to
address factors that contribute to absence from school.
In addition Education Welfare undertakes to protect children
from exploitation and harm (including educationally) in the areas
of child employment and entertainment.

* Defined as being from the term after their 5th birthday until
the last Friday in June of the school year in which she or he
reaches the age of 16.
