Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)

The Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) is now available online. You can still download selected sections as documents including:

  • sample policies;
  • guidance for schools on information security; and
  • guidance for staff on the safer use of the Internet.

Schools can customise these resources with their own school logos and more local instructions.

A sample 'Governors Acceptable Use Policy' was added in May 2015.

An update to the 'Information Security Guidance for Schools' (v3.0) was added in November 2014.

A sample 'Bring Your Own Device' (BYOD) agreement was added in December 2014.

An update to the 'Photographic Images of Children Guidelines' was added in February 2015.

An update to the 'Staff guidance for the safer use of the internet' (March 2015).

  • The information given in this document will help schools to write their own policy.
  • Many pupils are very familiar with internet use and culture and it would be wise to discuss the School Internet Policy with them, possibly through a student council.
  • Schools and academies need to ensure that pupils and staff use the email service they provide in an appropriate manner.
  • There are many circumstances where schools may wish to publish digital images (either video or still) of students or their work.
  • Video conferencing provides users with access to high quality video conferencing, and the ability to use file share, chat, and whiteboard functions.
  • Copyright protection exists to prevent people copying original works without the consent of the author. This includes videos, photos, music and documents.
  • Schools hold information on both pupils and staff, and in doing so must follow the requirements of the 1998 Data Protection Act (DPA).
  • New guidance for schools relating to the importance of keeping information secure has now been added to the West Sussex Acceptable Use policy.
