Rail discounts for post-16 students

Apply for a scheme to get discounts on rail travel if you are a student.

1 16-17 Saver

Please note: The Sussex Student Card scheme has now been discontinued and replaced with the 16-17 Saver.

The 16-17 Saver is a national railcard for all 16 and 17 year olds. It costs £30 per year and gives 50 per cent off standard anytime, off-peak, advance and season tickets for travel at any time of the day.

The 16-17 Saver is valid for one year or up until your 18th birthday, whichever comes first.

However, if you buy a discounted season ticket before your 16-17 Saver expires, you can continue to use your discounted season ticket for up to four months after the expiry of your 16-17 Saver (even if you turn 18 during that time).

The 16-17 Saver will have two expiry dates shown on it:

  • ‘Valid until’ - this is the date up to which you can buy new tickets.
  • ‘Season ticket valid until’ - this is the date up to which you can continue to use your discounted Season ticket for travel. This is four months after the ‘Valid until’ date.

2 Unizone rail ticket (college and university students)

If you’re studying in or around Brighton or Worthing, the Unizone ticket gives you unlimited discounted travel.

To qualify for a Unizone ticket you will need:

  • a valid 16-17 Saver or 16-25 Railcard
  • a valid ID card confirming that you are a student in further or higher education.
