Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks
If you are successful in your application, and the nature of the work involves regular contact with children, you will be required to apply for an enhanced check from the DBS.
Candidates who have been working and/or living abroad will also be expected to provide evidence that they do not have a criminal record. Visit the GOV.UK web page Arranging checks as an employer for more information about overseas applicants and UK applicants who have lived abroad.
Rehabilitation of offenders
Applicants for posts teaching children and young people are not entitled to withhold details of any criminal convictions which might be considered spent. Failure to disclose previous convictions may lead to your application being rejected, or your dismissal if appointed. We will take into consideration any information you disclose. This will not automatically prevent your application from proceeding, unless the headteacher considers that you would be unsuitable for the job.
In making this decision the headteacher and governing body will consider:
- the nature of the offence
- how long ago it happened
- how old you were when you committed the offence.
You will have the opportunity to discuss, in strictest confidence, any previous convictions you may have at the time of your interview.
Overseas-trained teachers
To comply with current legislation, WSCC has to ask all successful external applicants to provide evidence that they are entitled to work in the UK.
