Information relating to coronavirus is regularly changing, so we will update this section with the latest guidance as soon as we can.

Registration of births, deaths and ordering certificates

Find latest updates on our services.

Registering a death

All registration appointments will now be conducted by phone. Please do not attend the Registration Office and book your appointment online as normal.

While we will do our best to contact you during the allotted half hour, this may not be possible, so please bear with us and you will get a call that day.

If the doctor has already handed you the Medical Cause of Death Certificate, please drop it in to the Registration Office at Crawley, Chichester, Haywards Heath or Worthing as soon as possible.

You must do this before your appointment.

Read the Government's recent leaflet What to do when someone dies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Registering a birth

Please be aware, we currently have a high volume of parents wishing to register a birth, so the first available appointment in certain offices may be in a few weeks’ time. We appreciate your patience whilst we catch up with the backlog.

If your baby is over 12 months old, additional paperwork needs to be completed before the registration can take place. Call 01243 642122 and ask for Technical Enquiries for information.

Alternatively, you can phone 01243 642122.

Before booking any travel arrangements abroad, please allow time for the birth to be registered and passport application processed. Both services will be under extreme pressure at this time, so it could take longer than usual.

Before registering the birth, new parents can make a claim for Child Benefit or Universal Credit.

For emergency birth registrations, please contact us on 01243 642122 and ask for Technical Enquiries.
