Registration of births, deaths and ordering certificates

Registering a death

All registration appointments will now be conducted by phone. Please do not attend the Registration Office and book your appointment online as normal.

While we will do our best to contact you during the allotted half hour, this may not be possible, so please bear with us and you will get a call that day.

If the doctor has already handed you the Medical Cause of Death Certificate, please drop it in to the Registration Office at Crawley, Chichester, Haywards Heath or Worthing as soon as possible.

You must do this before your appointment.

Read the Government's recent leaflet What to do when someone dies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Registering a birth

We are commencing a phased return for birth appointments from Monday 8 March.

As a priority, we are rebooking the appointments that were cancelled between December 2020 and February 2021. We will be contacting those parents affected to rebook their appointment. Once these have been completed, we will open for new bookings, so please check for an update week commencing 22 March. We appreciate your patience during this time.

Before booking any travel arrangements abroad, please allow time for the birth to be registered and passport application processed. Both services will be under extreme pressure at this time, so it could take longer than usual.

Before registering the birth, new parents can make a claim for Child Benefit or Universal Credit.

For emergency birth registrations only, please contact us on 01243 642122 and ask for technical enquiries.
