How we have responded to Government requirements for ceremonies.

Marriages and civil partnerships

We will restart marriages and civil partnerships on Saturday 4 July in line with the current Government advice.

As previously advised, during the initial reintroduction period, all West Sussex County Council ceremony rooms will only be able to accommodate the legal minimum number of persons for statutory ceremonies, in order to keep everyone safe.

This means the couple, their two witnesses and the two registrars. We are reviewing this but currently cannot give a date for when numbers are likely to increase. Licensed venues may be able to accommodate more while still working within the Government guidelines. This is likely to vary according to the venue.

We have already been permitted to take notices and we will book notice appointments for currently booked ceremonies in date priority.

New bookings from January 2021 are being taken. However, we are not currently taking any new ceremony bookings in 2020 until we have ensured we have been able to book notices for the pre-booked ceremonies. We expect to be able to open for new 2020 bookings in a few weeks’ time.

If you wish to postpone or cancel your booking please phone 01243 642122. We do not charge for like-for-like postponements.

New Citizens - Citizenship Ceremony

If you have a letter from the Home Office advising you to attend a Citizenship Ceremony, you have a six-month window to attend from the date on your invitation letter. This has been extended from the standard three months.
