An apprenticeship is where you combine working full-time with studying towards a qualification, with the advantage of earning a wage whilst getting work experience.
Levels of an apprenticeship
There are four levels of apprenticeship:
- Intermediate - Level 2, equivalent 5 GCSE passes at level A to C
- Advanced - Level 3, equivalent to 2 A Level passes
- Higher - Level 4, equivalent to a foundation degree
- Degree - Level 6 and 7, equivalent to a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree.
Depending on the level you choose, an apprenticeship can take between one to four years to complete.
Who can apply
To apply for an apprenticeship you need to:
- be 16 or over
- not be in full-time education
- have the right to live and work in the UK.
You can also apply if you hold a degree, as long as the apprenticeship qualification is different from your degree subject. If you have a learning disability, you may be eligible to study English or Math’s functional skills to Entry Level 3, which is lower than the required Level 2. Ask your training provider about this.

How much will I earn?
You will be paid while you learn. Information on the National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage rates can be found on GOV.UK. Your training will be fully funded and many employers will pay more as you develop your skills. You'll also get 20 days paid holiday per year, plus bank holidays.
