Bipolar disorder

Find out about Bipolar Disorder and where to go if you need further advice or support.

Bipolar Disorder, also known as manic depression, is a condition that affects your moods.

If you have bipolar disorder you will experience periods of:

  • depression - where you can feel low and lethargic
  • mania - where you feel high and hyperactive.

Depending on how severe the condition is, these different moods can last hours, days or even weeks.

Watch Stephen Fry talk about his own experiences of bipolar disorder.

If you are diagnosed as being bipolar, long-term treatment, including a combination of medication, counselling and self-help techniques, can mean the effect the condition has on your everyday life is managed effectively.

More information on the condition, including the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and what it's like to live with bipolar, are on the NHS Choices website.
