Each school has a set of rules, called over-subscription criteria or admissions criteria. If a school is over-subscribed it will use these rules when allocating places.
The over-subscription criteria we set are the criteria that apply to the majority of community and voluntary controlled schools in the county. There are some exceptions to these criteria which are in the Information for parents booklets.
The booklets below set out the admissions process and criteria for the 2018/19 school year.
- Information for parents: Starting school 2018/19 booklet (PDF, 2.2MB)
- Information for parents: Transferring from infant school to junior school 2018/19 booklet (PDF, 914KB)
The criteria and scheme of co-ordination for 2018/19 have now been determined. These are explained in the West Sussex school admissions arrangements 2018/19 document.
Academies and church aided, foundation and free schools
Academies and church aided, foundation and free schools are their own admissions authority, so have their own set of criteria. Admission policies for these schools can be found on their websites.
Their admission arrangements, which include oversubscription policies and, where applicable, supplementary information form and a priest or church form, are available below.

You must complete an online application naming the school as well as the school’s own form or your application cannot be considered.
