Adopt a stepchild

Find out how to adopt a partner’s child.

Generally, the process for adopting a partner’s child (known as Partner Adoption) is the same as if you were applying to adopt an unknown child. However, instead of attending an adoption panel, the applicant and child’s parent are required to attend court hearings.

Applicants need to be at least 21 years of age and must have resided with the child for a minimum of six months. We would also expect the applicant and child’s parent to have been living as partners, in an enduring family relationship, for at least two years before assessment begins.
