Take care of our countryside

Think, Share, Be Aware!

Are you playing your part?

Inspiring wetlands and ancient woodlands, chalk grassland walks and wonderful flowers and wildlife - there's so much to explore! Let's look after our countryside, and others who use it.

The number of visitors to the West Sussex South Downs, including the Downs Link, Worth Way and our country parks is on the increase, which is great!

But with the increase in users comes the need to be careful when out and about; whether that's on foot, bike or horseback, with friends, family or just walking the dog.

There are a few things you can do to ensure we all continue to enjoy our countryside:

  • Respect other visitors on your route and be courteous;
  • Cyclists: Please slow down and give way to walkers, horse riders and wheelchair users;
  • Please keep your dog under control and clear up after them. Any public bin will do;
  • Be aware parts of the Downs Link and Worth Way pass through working farmland;
  • Take your litter home with you.

Think of other users, Share rights of way with others, and Be Aware of what's around you!

Path closures and disruptions

Path closures and disruptions

Temporary Closure of the Downs Link at Southwater

The path closure is necessary to protect public safety during the construction of Broadacres Phases 1.6 and 3.1. Use is temporarily prohibited with effect from 9th July 2018. Unfortunately, there are no alternative routes available using the public rights of way network. This Notice will be effective for 21 days from the date given above and will be followed by a further closure.

Temporary Closure with diversion on Worth Way

A 29 metre section of Worth Way (Turners Hill) will be closed due to a S159 Notice served by Thames Water to replace a sewer pipe.

Update 13th July 2018

Thames Water has informed WSCC that the planned closure with diversion for sewer works - on the section of Worth Way at Turners Hill will not be going ahead after all this year. The closure is now cancelled.

Flood Defence Scheme Latest

The Environment Agency has started work on a major flood defence scheme that will significantly reduce flood risk in Shoreham.

The whole scheme, that affects the southern end of the River Adur, is due to be completed by Autumn 2018.

The works mean that the Downs Link in Shoreham, from south of the Old Shoreham Toll Bridge to Shoreham High Street, will remain closed.

A signed diversion will be in place until works are completed.
